Stephen Baldwin and a Common Evolution Misunderstanding

If we evolved from apes, why were there still apes?

This ranks up there with the "it's only a theory" argument: pointless, baseless, and shows that the person spouting the question is completely ignorant of what they're attempting to debunk.

The development of various species during gestation.

As much as the churches and egocentric humans would like you to think otherwise, we are animals and having watched the way humans treat each other, and the tea party protests, over the past year I'm not even willing to call ourselves civilized animals. We all pretty much begin the same way, as an embryo. The embryo of vertebrates all look similar: human, rabbits, pigs, cows, turtles, chickens, salamanders, fish, and so on. To the right is sketches of these species in development.

The only people who really express any doubt towards evolution are either the religious or the ignorant, and most of the time the two are put together. People have the tendency to write off that which they do not understand. The idea of people evolving over an extensive amount of time is one idea people have a hard time grasping. It's just so much easier to believe some magic man a few thousand years ago snapped his fingers and suddenly we're all here.

Human Embryo

This is what you looked like after about seven weeks, looking like something more out of Aliens then anything recognizable as human. This is our beginning, every one of us.

So, Stephen Baldwin is on Celebrity Big Brother in the UK. I'm not sure how they got on the topic of evolution but Baldwin drops the "still monkeys" argument.

The Tree of Life

I was born in 1980, my sister in 1985. If my sister came from my mother, why do I still exist? This is the same question. We did not come from monkeys, apes, gorillas, or chimpanzees and if someone of authority is telling you that this is what evolution teaches then they are doing you a disservice. Evolution teaches that we came from a common ancestor which is a huge difference. Humans and chimps have a common ancestor, going further back you'll find that we have a common ancestor with all the different African apes.

We did not come from monkeys, so please do us all a favor and drop this line of argument.
