Raimi felt that he could not complete the film in time for Sony's deadline of 2011.

Sony has decided to reboot the Spider-Man series now instead of after SM4 (which is what was originally planned) and set it for a release of 2012. The supposed change will be "gritty" and "contemporary."

Isn't it a bit early to reboot a franchise that is only three films old?
